I remember waiting at the bar and the bartender made one of the other guests get up and give me a seat – Butch insisted on class at his bar!
He also had the best cole slaw ever and shared his recipe with me! What a guy!

I live in Madison WI now but lived on the near north side and the western suburbs for years.
I’m guessing I was in Butchs around 1962.
I also ran into Butch once when I was living in Aspen and he brought a crowd out there for a few days.
I will attend the 50th.
Keep me posted

I am planning to fly up from Florida for the 50th, but I need SPECIFIC dates for any events planned (to schedule filghts, hotel, etc.). Wheelchair availability? (just kiding). I understand you are talking about June 1, 2011 which is a Wednesday. Are events being talked about after (or before) that date? It is easier and cheaper to fly back to FL on a Thursday or Monday. I am really looking forward to this, and re-connecting with others “who have survived.” Is there going to be an award for the most divorces? Or longest prison terms?

We hadn’t really thought about giving awards out, but I’m sure Butch would approve. It’s whether or not we can name the awards the way he would have, that is my concern! Our plan is to try and close Division Street on a lovely summer Saturday afternoon and share our 50 years of good fortune and community with everyone…Obviously in Chicago that takes some planning, so the date is not yet named but as soon as we know you will too.
Thanks for the interest and the ideas.

George C. Jordan III says:
Butch McGuire’s Saloon was the watering hole for many students and alumni of Parsons College. It was our collective meeting place. It was where some of our graduates worked. Butch was a friend to one and all. His year-round promotions helped raise funds for many worthy causes in Chicagoland. I remember when one had to be over 21 to be admitted. I remember when he sought out locals as opposed to the conventioneers. I remember when he expanded his Saloon and added a food menu. The memories keep on rolling on. I remember when I last saw Butch. I had a picture taken with him and gave him a Parsons College pennant. I remember when I was informed of his death. He was probably the best known Saloon-Keeper in Mid-America. Yet, he never forgot his purpose or his friends. His motto: Treat people who come into your saloon as you would treat guests coming into your home. Give them the best of what you have and offer them kind hospitality. We miss you Butch. – George C. Jordan III

God, 50 years. It doesn’t seem that long ago that I first went to Butch’s.
I worked at Standard Oil in the mid-’60s. Almost every week on Friday a group of us would head up to Rush Street after work. After grabbing a burger and beer at O’Briens (if memory serves), we would cross the street to The Store. After getting fairly trashed there, we would usually drop in at The Filling Station and Catfish Row for a few. Then up to Butch’s to close out the night.
Those were the days, my friend.

50 years!!! I must have been about ten when I worked there in the early 80′s. Bobby, that would have made you about five.
Fuzzy and KK say we must make it home for this great party. Please post date asap — so I can plan a trip home. Do you need old photos? I have several –I just have to find them. Let me know. I can put together a poster or two to save you and Eddie some time. Looking forward to the party.

Got to Butch’s a little later-with the Santa Claus Anonymous crew, but want to be there for the 50th. Also worked with Butch’s personal banker and had co-workers who “got the deal done” at the bar. Hope they signed that bar napkin! Please send me details so I can attend.

Please add me to the list for the 50th Anniversary event. Cheers.
I met Judy on a Sunday, June 30, 1968…an hour after Butch fired me for missing that day’s staff meeting. (“come back in 2 weeks…you do a great job and we’ll want you back”). Judy ‘picked me up’ because she said I had “a sad, sad face”. We married 6 months later. Moved back to Chicago about 7 years ago, walked in and there was Butch, sitting at the bar…with his eternal cigar in hand. Great chat, pictures, etc. THANKS BUTCH, we’ll be there,
