Alderman Natarus Raises a Toast to the Late Butch McGuire with Son Bobby McGuire
Robert Emmet “Butch” McGuire Sr. was a gentleman, a barkeep and a father to a generation of Chicagoans.
The beloved owner of Butch McGuire’s, 20 W. Division, died Wednesday of heart failure at his home in Rochester, Minn. He was 76.
Butch McGuire’s was one of America’s first singles bars. In 1961, with a $531 loan from his mother, Mr. McGuire bought Bobby Farrell’s Sho Lounge, a busted-out Division Street speakeasy, a place full of hookers, pimps and gamblers.
